The Aras Platform & Model-Based SOA
A Platform for Flexible PLM Processes
Every company has a unique and complex way of doing business and must constantly adapt to new market conditions, customer demands, and other factors.
But with traditional PLM architectures customizing to meet a business's actual needs is both technically challenging to do and often means companies are left with a implementation that cannot easily be upgraded to take advantage of software enhancements. They also sometimes end up paying premium support costs.
The Aras Innovator platform was designed to be flexible, allowing organizations to easily customize their PLM and PDM solutions and to align to actual business needs rather than compromising those needs to fit to a rigid piece of software. This can range from configuring an existing application, extending its scope or creating a completely new application.
Compared to conventional PLM systems, which usually require months to customize, Aras Innovator allows businesses to quickly and easily make real-time modifications to solutions using browser-based, drag-and-drop operations. Data model, item types, relationship types, workflows, lifecycle maps, permissions and forms can all be easily modified and tailored on the fly with any system downtime to fit the business's exact needs.
Additionally, upgrades remain straightforward and easy no matter the amount of customization as a result of the separation of meta-data templates from the core services. Upgrades are always straightforward and easy. Aras performs upgrades for subscribers at no additional cost. This is unique in the industry. No other PLM vendor can make the same promise.
Instead of the traditional approach - defining an object model which is hard coded into the services - Aras chose to separate the two. The result is a run-time web application framework consisting of loosely coupled / federated web services optimized for performance and scalability which form a service-oriented architecture (SOA) - the Platform.
Aras then use meta-data templates to describe everything: application functionality, business logic, data schema, screens, workflows, etc.. The meta-data templates define the objects in the system and those objects then "subscribe" to the services that they need. Aras call this a "model-based SOA" and it is the basis for creating flexible, scalable, upgradable applications.
The Aras Model-Based Service Oriented Architecture enables the rapid implementation of solutions either from scratch or starting with defined industry templates thus driving significantly faster enterprise deployments. Forms, workflows, relationships structures, and data model schema can all be tailored and configured in real-time at a business level.
